BLURB:

Allegiance, faithfulness, honor…
Loyalty goes by many names.
Emmie Landon is off-limits. She has a young son, works with my brother Jake, and lugs around enough baggage to fill an entire football stadium. But I can’t resist her long, shapely legs and thick, soft curls, begging to be wrapped around my hands.
Mark Harrington is too-everything. Too good looking, too funny, too charming, too brutally honest, too impulsive. He’s accustomed to getting his way, and never afraid to throw down the gauntlet. So what if I can’t stop thinking about his devilish blue eyes and his lip-smacking happy trail?
He needs someone to love.
She needs someone to love her.
Two seemingly incompatible lives…
Two hearts capable of total devotion.
**Despite being volume five in The New American Royals Series, Loyal Subjects may be read and enjoyed as a standalone contemporary romance.**

About Eva

After being a confirmed city-girl for more than thirty-five years, Eva moved to beautiful Western Massachusetts in 2014. There, she found herself living in the woods with no job, no friends (unless you count the turkey, deer, and coyote roaming the backyard), and no children underfoot, wondering what on earth she’d been thinking. But as it turned out, it was the perfect setting to take all those yarns spinning in her head and weave them into romantic tales.
When she’s not writing, trying to squeeze information out of her tight-lipped sons, or playing with the two cutest dogs you’ve ever seen, Eva’s creating chapters in her own love story.

Review

4 out of 5 stars

I love series about families, so I’m not sure how I hadn’t heard of this series before. I will be going back to read the first four books (all standalones) when I finally catch up on my ARC’s.

Emmie Landon is a single mom to an 8-year old son and works for a pro football team. One of the players on the team, Jake Harrington, invites Emmie and her son Teddy to his family cottage to swim and play on the beach with his big family. While at the cottage, Emmie runs into Jake’s brother Mark, who is playing with Teddy, who had walked away while Emmie was changing (he wasn’t supposed to).

Emmie has had a very hard life. Neglected and abandoned at an early age have left her with major trust issues and overly protective of her son. She also doesn’t have many people to rely on besides her mother-in-law, whom she moves with her to Boston with her to help raise her son. Her MIL, Ruth, is a pretty awful character (you’ll understand why when you read – I won’t spoil). Her awfulness is understandable but not justifiable.

Mark has had a very different upbringing. A close knit family with siblings and cousins all around him. He is very protective, and instantly wants more with Emmie and Teddy. Emmie is very reluctant to start something with Mark, despite the fact that she really likes him and is quickly becoming tight with his family.

Emmie’s insecurities wore thin for me pretty quickly. She was a likeable character, and even after being shown she could trust and love Mark, she had a hard time with it.  Mark, on the other hand, was a great character, who was full of love and life. He was great with Teddy and did everything he could to make Teddy and Emmie happy.

There were a few side stories that weren’t resolved and needed to be. One revolved around Jake (it was briefly mentioned but that’s all) and the other involved Ruth. The one with Ruth really needed to be addressed and it just wasn’t. I found that strange and unsatisfying.

I liked the epilogue a lot – it did close a few storylines nicely.

This was my first Eva Charles book and it won’t be my last.
