Five Movies that make me proud to be an American

Memorial Day is Monday, and it’s the unofficial start to summer here in the US. On Memorial Day, we remember those who sacrificed their lives in war for our freedom. I didn’t want to focus on war, because it’s sad, so I thought for this week, I’d do movies that make me proud to be an American. Here we go…..

Apollo 13. So funny story – Apollo 13 blasted off on April 11, 1970, which also happens to be the day my parents got married. This movie celebrates the American work ethic – American engineers helping to get American astronauts back from space after an accident.  I get goosebumps at the end of this movie every time I watch this movie – which is often.

Independence Day. Yes, this movie is a bit ridiculous, but the scene when the President talks about Independence Day will give you chills.

Miracle.  This one is pretty self explanatory. The US was an underdog to Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY, and came from nowhere to beat them. The story in itself is amazing, as is the movie.

The Sandlot. What is more American than young kids playing baseball? Nothing. I’m a girl and spent my summers as a child playing baseball. Plus this movie is set in the 1960’s, a much simpler time in America.

Patriots Day. A movie that displays a town coming together after a terrible tragedy and hunting down the perpetrator in true American fashion. A tough movie to watch, but a must see.

This weeks topic is:

Five Favorite TV Shows

I’m not limiting to current shows – I am doing my all time favorites.

The Office. The Office is my all time favorite show. I have watched it from start to finish 3 times. I watch when re-runs are on, and if I’m having a bad day. Jim and Pam are also one of my all time favorite couples.  LOVE this show.

The West Wing. One of the best written shows of all time. Aaron Sorkin can do no wrong in my eyes.

Arrested Development.  One of the funniest shows that people didn’t watch while it was on. I know this show is huge on Netflix, and rightfully so. This show is incredibly clever and funny. If you haven’t watched it, please do. You’ll thank me later.

The Big Bang Theory. I have seen every episode of this show at least 5 times. This show is full of goofy characters, but the growth of these characters over 11 seasons has been very fun to watch.

Game of Thrones. After watching Downton Abbey, I decided to watch another show full of British actors and I loved it! This show is simply amazing. And I’m House Stark all the way!

Fave Five Friday – TV Moms

Welcome to Fave Five Friday! This meme is similar to others – create your post and attach a link in the comments. I look forward to hearing from you!

In honor of Mother’s Day weekend, I’m honoring the best TV moms from shows I’ve watched.

This weeks topic is:

Five Favorite TV Moms

Here are mine.

Claire Dunphy of Modern Family.  Claire is a real woman, who works and is raising three kids and a husband.  She’s smart, and she knows who her kids are (she knows Luke isn’t super smart, etc).  She’s funny and relatable on so many levels.

claire dunphy

Carole Brady of the Brady Bunch.  How can you do a list of best moms and not include Mrs. Brady.  The woman took on 3 additional kids and raised them as her own, rarely losing her temper.  She was crazy impressive on so many levels.

carol brady

Mabel Thomas from What’s Happening.  I had mad respect for Mamma, and not because she was a large and in charge woman.  She was a single mom, doing the best she could, and she raised two pretty incredible kids.  And she raised Dee, who was by far the biggest brat ever born:)

mabel thomas

Catlin Stark from Game of Thrones.  If you have read my blog, you know I’m a huge GOT fan, and I’m all about House Stark.  While Catlin was a major bitch to Jon Snow, she was fiercely protective of her own children.  She never left Bran’s side after he was injured.  She fought with Robb.  She was a real renaissance woman.

caitlin stark

Jill Taylor from Home Improvement.  Jill was a saint.  Raising three boys and keeping up with a doofus husband while going to school made for one impressive character.  The amount of stupid crap she had to endure was insane, but she was always a likable character.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers out there!!!

As you know, today is May 4th, which is Star Wars day. For those who aren’t big fans of Star Wars, they chose this day since May the Force be with you sounds like May the 4th!  I’m a big fan of Star Wars, so this week, I’m doing my five favorite characters from the movies. If you’re not a fan, feel free to do a freebie.

This weeks topic is:

Five Favorite Star Wars Characters

Here are mine.

5. Princess Leia. She’s a real kick ass chick. She fights for what is right, falls in love during the process, and finds her long, lost brother. She’s funny, witty and tough.

4. Yoda. Who doesn’t love this 800 year old Jedi master? He teaches young Luke (who is not one of my favorites – he’s too whiny) the ways of the force.

3. Chewbacca. Han Solo’s loyal companion and “walking carpet.” He’s incredibly smart and handy, yet sweet.

2. C3P0 and R2D2. These two kind of go together anyway. While C3P0 is a worry wort, R2D2 rolls with punches and gets people (and droids) out of situations pretty quickly. They are pretty funny together.

  1. Han Solo. Probably no great surprise that Han Solo is my favorite. I’ve been a huge fan of him for over 40 years now. And I’m so excited for the Han Solo movie coming out later this month!

Fave Five Friday – Favorite books of all time

Good morning lovelies! There are no Friday memes (it seems) anymore. I used to participate in one called Fave Five Friday that seems to have disappeared, so I’m bringing it back, with the hopes that my fellow bloggers will enjoy it and share their own favorites. This will not be limited to just books/blogging. I will expand to TV and movies as well.

This week, I’m starting easy and doing my five favorite books of all time.

Sheri’s Five Favorite Books of all time

Sphere by Michael Crichton. I have never read a book that kept me as riveted as this book did. There was a movie made from this book that I refused to watch, because I knew it would be awful. I read this book 25 years ago and I remember staying up until 2 in the morning to finish it, it was that good.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I read this in high school and was riveted by the story. The racism is disgusting but the lessons that Atticus was able to teach his children was priceless.

Rock Chick by Kristen Ashley. I was very late to the Rock Chick craze, but I’ve devoured the series. Rock Chick, featuring Indy and Lee still ranks as my favorite. Lee often makes my list of book boyfriends.

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. This story about two estranged sisters who learn about their estranged mothers history is so beautiful. I can’t praise this book enough. I’d highly recommend it if you haven’t read it.

Making Faces by Amy Harmon. I read this book five years ago but I remember it like I read it yesterday. Beautifully written story with flawed characters you will remember forever.  This book is a must read.
