Book Review – Beard Science by Penny Reid (Winston Brothers #3)

Goodreads Summary

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate. And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.beard-science

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?  Likely, the last thing you expect.

Review

Beard Science is the third book in the Winston Brothers series and focuses on brother Cletus (I hate that name, btw). Cletus is kind of a loner and a thinker.  He’s also a revenge seeker, so be sure not to cross him.

Jennifer Sylvester is basically a Stepford child. She does whatever her parents tell her to do, when they tell her.  She has to dress a certain way, act a certain way and she’s the Banana Cake Queen of Tennessee.  There is a problem though – Jennifer hates her life and wants a change.

So, here is my problem. I found Jennifer’s story to be ludicrous.  I’m supposed to believe that in 2016 two parents would have the kind of control over their 22-year old child that Jennifer’s parents had over her?  I can barely get my 11-year old to do what I ask.  The whole situation was just so dumb.  It really took away from the story, too.

While I hated Jennifer’s story, I liked her. She was weak and didn’t stand up for herself, and by the end of the book, was an entirely new person.  I did enjoy reading her transformation.

Cletus has been a favorite of mine since book 1. He’s very level-headed and loyal to his siblings.  He is really a good guy.  But he’s broken, due to his upbringing and his father’s turbulent past.  Cletus also finds himself along the way.

Story wise, there was too much unnecessary detail and the book was a little too long. I have a feeling the next book is going to be about Beau, which should be interesting.  I will most certainly keep reading this series.  I love the Winston Boys.

Happy reading.

Ryker by Megan O’Brien.  I’m at 90% and ran out of train time.  I hate when that happens!!!  If this is the last book in the series, I hope there’s a good epilogue.  I’m enjoying this book, but it’s not my favorite of the series.

What I recently finished

I finished Grin and Beard it by Penny Reid yesterday.  I love the Winston brothers, and this book was good – but about 100 pages too long.  I would recommend it though.

I may actually change things up a bit this week and read Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple.  This book has been recommended to me several times, so what the hell!  If I don’t like that, I’ll read The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson, which has been on this list for weeks now:)

what i'm currently readingGrin and Beard It by Penny Reid.  I loved the first book in this series, and the second book is really good so far.  I love the heroine, Sienna.  She is hilarious!  She’s like a Latina Melissa McCarthy!  It’s so funny and sweet.

What I recently finished

Mackenzie Fire by Elle Casey.  The second book in the series wasn’t nearly as good as the first, but I loved the heroine.  She was smart, funny and very brave.  Ian was kind of a brooding asshole for a part of the book, but he grew on me.

Ryker by Megan O’Brien.  Looking forward to finishing this series.  I love these alpha male MC members.  Then I think I will read the Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson.   This book is on a lot of TBR’s.

Man Crush Monday

Man Crush Monday #8

This is my eighth installment in my Man Crush Monday meme.  Since I read mostly romance, I thought I’d share some of my “book crushes” with you, and possibly introduce you to some new reading material.

My Man Crush Monday for this week is Duane Winston from Truth or Beard by Penny Reid.

Summary from goodreads.com:  Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the truth or beardsame devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

Duane Winston is an identical twin – and Jessica James has had a major crush on Beau Winston forever.  A chance encounter with Jessica gives Duane a chance to spend time with her, and he takes it.  The problem – Jessica thinks she’s with Beau – because she can’t stand Duane.

Duane was such a sweetheart.  He seemed like a gruff kind of jerk, but he really wasn’t.  He had had a crush on Jessica for a long time, and I loved watching their relationship develop.

Very good book and book 2 in the series comes out tomorrow!!!

Happy reading and Happy Memorial Day.
